Residents Find Employment at APAH Winter Job Fair
In mid-February, APAH hosted the Winter Job Fair for APAH residents and the community at-large at Gilliam Place. Employers from across the DMV region including the MJ Morgan Group, Army Navy Country Club, and Sherwin-Williams met with over 50 participants discussing job opportunities and conducting interviews. Training programs like Together We Bake, Year Up!, and La Cocina VA also attended and met with participants. Twice a year, APAH hosts job fairs like this as part of its resident services programming; to help residents enter the workforce, advance in their careers, or find better employment.
In preparation for the job fair, many APAH residents attended a Computer Core classes, an eight-week long computer training program at which residents learned how to write resumes and cover letters and search and apply for jobs online. The class even offered interview tips. Residents could also attend the APAH Job Club, another resource for job skill refinement held at Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center, which hosted two workshops for personalized resume help work, cover letter editing, and mock interviews.
The job fair resulted in a number of success stories: Reston Limousine hired three people on the spot and several APAH residents received calls within a week of the job fair for interviews. Employers and participants alike are eager to return to the next job fair, planned for this summer.
