APAH Inks Deal to Purchase Arna Valley Apartments in S. Arlington – InsideNova – March 3, 2014
The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing on Feb. 28 announced the purchase of Arna Valley View apartments, located close to Interstate 395 and South Glebe Road, with the plan to retain the 101 units as affordable housing for at least the next 60 years.
The non-profit housing developer purchased the garden-style property from Avalon Bay Communities, which had constructed it in 2001 as part of the redevelopment of the Arna Valley site.
Located in what had been an historically African-American community, Arna Valley by the late 1990s was becoming home to many Latino immigrants. In 1999, after a contentious public process, Avalon Bay received County Board approval to redevelop the community to a 924-unit complex that is a combination of town homes and garden-style apartments.
