Thank You, John Milliken!
After two years of leadership, we celebrate and give thanks for the service of APAH’s outgoing board chair, John Milliken.
As APAH’s 2016-2017 board chair, John directed our board with a passion for Arlington and its residents at the forefront. Under his leadership, APAH opened The Springs Apartments, broke ground on Columbia Hills and Gilliam Place, and acquired, preserved eight garden apartments in the Westover neighborhood, and secured entitlements for the redevelopment of our Queens Court Apartments in Rosslyn and at American Legion Post 139.
He also guided APAH’s new strategic plan, which deepens our enduring commitment to housing and the needs of low income families. “John has been a wonderful mentor and supporter for me personally,” reflected Nina Janopaul, APAH’s President and CEO, “and a fantastic leader for our Board.”
For more than 40 years, John has been a leader and advocate for Arlington and was recognized for his many contributions by the Arlington Community Foundation with the 2017 William T. Newman Jr. Spirit of Community Award. In nominating John, APAH asked, ” Why do [so many] organizations seek out John for leadership? The answer is simple: John brings to every challenge a formidable combination of wisdom, judgment, community-centered values and a dogged commitment to work together for the best possible outcomes for all.”
With nearly a decade as a member of Arlington’s County Board, state-wide service as Virginia’s Secretary of Transportation and leadership of countless commissions and agencies, John exemplifies the very best of public service. All of us at APAH thank him for his commitment and look forward to his continued service as chair of Board’s Community Resources and Relations Committee.
